Furious may have just ended its first season, but viewers looking for another tense, edge-of-your-seat thriller with the same combination of mystery, complicated characters, and revenge have plenty of other options. Hulu’s latest show follows Emmy Rossum’s FBI Agent Alice Black as she investigates a female serial killer named Catherine. With the help of FBI Agent Nora Washington and NYPD officer Danny Kelly, the investigation uncovers dark secrets and traumatic pasts while blurring the lines between hero and villain.

Furious doesn’t ask the audience who’s good or who’s bad, but instead challenges viewers to understand the circumstances that shaped them. The nail-biting, gut-wrenching finale aired on August 31, and fortunately, there are plenty of great thriller movies that explore similar territory. From gripping cat-and-mouse stories to uncomfortable explorations of moral complexity, these five films should scratch that addictive thriller itch.

Black Widow (1987) Inspired Elizabeth Meriwether to Write Furious

Before there was Furious, there was Black Widow. The 1987 neo-noir thriller stars Theresa Russell as “Catherine,” a woman who marries wealthy older men, promptly poisons them, and then inherits their fortune. Meanwhile, Debra Winger’s Alexandra Barnes, a Justice Department Analyst, notices the suspicious pattern and begins to investigate Catherine. Black Widow turns into a thrilling game of cat-and-mouse as the two women become increasingly obsessed with each other.

The connection to Furious is much more direct, as Black Widow inspired Elizabeth Meriwether’s show. However, Furious changes Black Widow’s original premise, moving away from the 1987 movie’s wealthy-man-and-inheritance storyline and focusing instead on trauma, abuse, and revenge. Meriwether explained that she was inspired by a brief moment between the two female leads, rather than simply wanting to remake the entire film.

For anyone who enjoyed Alice’s strange fascination with Catherine, and the way the two leads understood each other as victims, the original movie provides an interesting earlier version of that kind of dynamic. The narrative core is understandably similar, which means it might not be the most rewarding next watch for Furious fans.

The Leads’ Dynamic in Silence of the Lambs is Exceptionally Compelling

The Silence of the Lambs follows FBI trainee Clarice Sterling as she attempts to catch a serial killer known only as “Buffalo Bill.” His murders have left the FBI desperate for answers, so in an attempt to understand the criminal’s mind, Clarice turns to another imprisoned killer for help. Her cat-and-mouse game with Hannibal Lecter is one of cinema’s most iconic and compelling dynamics, combining horror, mystery, and psychological drama into an incredibly tense viewing experience.

Both Furious and The Silence of the Lambs place a female investigator against a dangerous killer, but the similarities become more interesting when considering the characters, not just the basic premise. Furious complicates the classic cop-vs-criminal formula because Catherine forms a deep psychological bond with Alice, much like Clarice bonds with Hannibal Lecter. In both projects, the line between hero and villain gets increasingly blurred while the agents’ past vulnerabilities are gradually uncovered. For anyone who loved the suspense and investigation in Furious, The Silence of the Lambs is the best next watch.

Furious’s Revenge Theme is On Full Display in Gone Girl

As a result, her husband Nick comes under intense suspicion, especially as the investigation into her disappearance becomes a media spectacle. The less that Nick’s story adds up, the more the audience is asked to question what really happened to Amy. Eventually, Gone Girl unravels its central missing-person idea and becomes an examination of manipulation, marriage, revenge, and the ways people construct identities for themselves.

Gone Girl’s moral uncertainty is what makes it such a great pick for Furious fans. Furious intentionally shifts fans’ allegiance between Alice and Catherine to make audiences question whether they identify more with the killer or the FBI agent. Gone Girl does something similar by repeatedly forcing viewers to reconsider who is the victim, who is responsible, and whether those categories can even be neatly filled. Both use revelations and differing perspectives to change our understanding of a character, making the emotional consequences of their crimes just as important as the mystery itself.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is Another Heartbreaking Exploration of Female Trauma

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo may not look as similar to Furious as Black Widow or Promising Young Woman, but its treatment of female trauma makes it a surprisingly good recommendation. The movie follows journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig), as he investigates the disappearance of a wealthy family’s daughter decades earlier.

Mikael teams up with the highly intelligent hacker Lisbeth (Rooney Mara), whose abuse has shaped her own interactions with the world. Their investigation takes them into a dark history of violence, while Lisbeth’s personal story becomes inseparable from the mystery they’re trying to solve. Lisbeth isn’t just a tool for solving the mystery; her history changes the way she responds to those responsible, and her willingness to take justice into her own hands makes her a morally complicated figure.

She’s very similar to Catherine in Furious; watching the show, viewers are encouraged to look beyond the crimes committed by its women and understand how they got there. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo explores all the same themes through a much darker investigative lens, making it an excellent next watch for anyone who enjoyed the unsettling nature of Furious.

Revenge Isn’t a Simple Solution in Promising Young Woman or Furious

Systemic failure and retribution are major themes in Furious, and Emerald Fennell’s Promising Young Woman explores many of the same ideas. After dropping out of med school, Cassie takes an unconventional path to justice by spending her nights at bars to confront men who are trying to take advantage of seemingly intoxicated women. Her actions are driven by a devastating event involving her best friend, and the feminist thriller gradually reveals how grief, anger, and institutional failure have led her on a dangerous quest for justice. Cassie’s memories of Nina feel just like Catherine’s heartbreaking grief over Isabel.

Both Furious and Promising Young Woman ask uncomfortable questions about whether those who have been failed by the system can reclaim power through violence, and what that process does to them. Female rage is at the center of both stories, but neither the movie nor the show ever make that anger feel uncomplicated. The moral tension that arises from Cassie’s violent actions and undeniable trauma, combined with the similarities between Catherine and Isabel, make Promising Young Woman the definitive perfect next watch for anyone who loved Furious.
